A Gathering of Shadows (Shades of Magic #2)

A Gathering of Shadows (Shades of Magic #2) von V. E. Schwab

Zusammenfassung:

Four months have passed since the shadow stone fell into Kell's possession. Four months since his path crossed with Delilah Bard. Four months since Rhy was wounded and the Dane twins fell, and the stone was cast with Holland's dying body through the rift, and into Black London.
In many ways, things have almost returned to normal, though Rhy is more sober, and Kell is now plagued by his guilt. Restless, and having given up smuggling, Kell is visited by dreams of ominous magical events, waking only to think of Lila, who disappeared from the docks like she always meant to do. As Red London finalizes preparations for the Element Games – an extravagant international competition of magic, meant to entertain and keep healthy the ties between neighboring countries – a certain pirate ship draws closer, carrying old friends back into port.
But while Red London is caught up in the pageantry and thrills of the Games, another London is coming back to life, and those who were thought to be forever gone have returned. After all, a shadow that was gone in the night reappears in the morning, and so it seems Black London has risen again – meaning that another London must fall.

Rezension:
But as he walked, heart pounding, he replayed the moment in his mind, the glimpse of a ghost.
But it hadn't been a ghost. Or a trick of the eye.
Delilah Bard was back in London.

3. Magie

5. Brillanz

Lies diese Reihe.

[Please insert the frustrated-ecstatic sound which is created when one has read the brilliant second instalment of a series without possessing the third.]

It comes as no surprise that Schwab's books are incredible. Still, I was blown away by the immense amazingness of this book. I was hooked from the beginning (although I was able to constrain myself to the "100 pages per day" rule for the first 300 pages - my self-control only just faltered today) simply because of Lila, whom I absolutely adore. Generally, the character development was fantastic, just as– but, wait, one thing after another.

1. Characters

As I was just saying: The characters really developed in this sequel and it was great! I now love Kell, Rhy, and Lila at least twice as much as after the first book and that means a lot. As a reader, we get a deep look into their souls, inner workings, abilities, and generally they're just incredibly round
"Round" in a sense of textual analysis - a classification of character which develop and are, well, sophisticatedly created. Boring, I know but I just wanted to point out how incredible these Characters are - from an academic perspective. (That's not really how it works but it sounds good, doesn't it?)

2. Action

I'd almost call this a "weird" sequel (don't worry I won't go into any details as to why exactly it is weird) because, although the plot continues to develop, it somehow also comes to something of a halt. To be fair, though, I didn't even notice that for the longest time because, obviously, there is still a lot going on and the things that were going on were extremely interesting. However, this development, or lack thereof (if you want to define it as "lack of development"), made the story even better - looking back I even like the first book more because of it. Suddenly everything seems twice as elaborate and I'm absolutely impressed.

3. Magic

Obviously, we've already been introduced to the concept magic in A Darker Shade of Magic but in A Gathering of Shadows we are presented with the opportunity to really get to know this magic. We get to experience it's boundaries, abilities, and dangers, as well as the importance/role of the balance which Kell always insists upon. Frankly, I am very impressed with how skilfully Schwab has done that.

4. World

Basically, all I want to say that I love this world/world building and, consequently, Schwab.

5. Brilliance

Seriously, read this series.

Bewertung:
